-Message sent to Timet!

This is the message I sent to Trimet:

I have always had trouble navigating by reading the bus maps because they aren't detailed enough. Every time I try to use the map to navigate, I end up lost, because the route maps don't really relate to the actual city streets the listed route to the actual city streets around them. Why don't the bus maps relate to the actual city map?

It probably won't have any effect, but I had to send it anyway.

At least you sent it, which is way more than most passengers will bother to do. If more of us write in, maybe they'll eventually listen.

I myself just recently submitted feedback about the loaded metal shopping carts and unfolded baby strollers contributing to the crowding conditions when passengers let them block the aisles and exits.

God, I hate that! Good for you, I'm glad you wrote them about it. ^_^

It's pretty obvious the route maps are simplified compared to an actual map (e.g., distance between some points are shown shorter or longer than actual, etc.), and some more than others, probably for more effective presentation of information. But it's interesting that there aren't any disclaimers actually saying this.

Exactly! So if you take a bus that looks like it will drop you where you're going, you might end up somewhere entirely different

That's exactly what happened to me a few years ago when I was heading to the location of a temp job I was assigned to. It was clear on the SW side, which I'm not familiar with at all. I left home, using the Trip Planner's advice and a copy of the system map at hand, with at least two hours to get there. Three hours later, I found myself stranded in the middle of nowhere and had to hike up a very long hill just to find someplace that had a phone for me to call the temp job. Needless to say, that job didn't pan out for me. ^^;;;; (This was before I could afford mobile phone service, which has been an absolute godsend for me, as you can imagine.)

Fortunately, I was able to make it back home, although I ended up having to take a very weird route back.

And this was all because I didn't know the area and because the information on the map and itinerary was misleading.

Yes! Just like you'd have no idea what was in between SE Division & SE Hawthorne, if you weren't familiar with the area.

Yes - sometimes their walking directions are really screwy. I recently went out to a temp assignment located on St. Helens Rd. The route they wanted me to take from the bus stop to the office was through a fenced-off industrial park.

They don't? Really? Aw man, that sucks! I went over to the transit store today, to get a system map. The guy I talked to said to let them know if I needed bigger print.

That's nice....

Even if you are familiar with an area, those maps are pretty much useless.
